Sticky Toffee Pears

Ingredients
 

  • 4 ripe pears
  • 500 millilitres water
  • 2 tablespoon soft brown sugar
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 whole cloves

Instructions
 

  • Put the water in a saucepan with the sugar and the whole spices.
  • Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Peel the pears and remove the core from the base of the pear. If you can leave the stalk on the pear as it looks better for serving.
  • Once the sugar has dissolved, add the peeled pears and poach on low heat for 15-20 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the pears from the cooking liquor and set aside.
  • Bring the syrup to boiling point and watch carefully as the liquid reduces and turns thick and syrupy.
  • Remove from the heat and pour over the pears.
  • Serve with cream or ice cream.
