Air Fryer Chipotle Chilli Potato Wedges
Air Fryer Chipotle Chilli Potato Wedges are a delicious smoky and spicy way to serve classic potato wedges. Potato wedges cook really well in your air fryer and this a fun way to add some extra flavour.
Why should I make Air Fryer Chipotle Chilli Wedges?
There are so many reasons why these potato wedges should be on your menu! They are super quick and easy to make, inexpensive and filling. They are also versatile as you can serve them as a side dish with your favourite mains or as a snack with salsa or a sour cream dip.
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a bit like a mini oven. However, the element is only at the top of the air fryer and it uses a powerful fan to circulate the heat. This combination of intense heat and circulation means that food crisps up quickly.
Air fryers were originally sold for their ability to create ‘fried’ food with less fat and they definitely do that. But the air fryer has also developed and more people are recognising the potential to cook and bake all kinds of foods.
Why should I cook the potato wedges in the air fryer?
Compared to your oven, an air fryer will heat up quickly due to the smaller size and the fan. And cooking in an air fryer is about half the cost of cooking in a standard oven. The circulating heat in the air fryer helps to ensure that the Chipotle Chilli Wedges roast evenly and quickly.
What ingredients do I need to make the Chipotle Chilli Potato Wedges?
This is a very simple side dish which uses very few ingredients. Here is what you will need:
- potatoes
- vegetable oil

- salt

What kind of potatoes should I use?
The best kind of potatoes for wedges is the same as the potato that you would use to make chips. You want a potato that will crisp up on the outside and go soft and fluffy inside.
My first choice would be Maris Piper as it is consistently good and makes great wedges. I have also made wedges with Desiree (red) potatoes and Rooster potatoes, mainly because I grow them in my garden. I have to say the results have also been very good. In the USA Yukon Gold is recommended for chips and wedges.

How much does a medium potato weigh?
I have suggested one medium potato per portion. A medium potato weighs around 200 grams (7 ounces).
What are chipotle chillies?
Chipotle Chillies are fully ripened jalapeno peppers that are smoke dried. They are dark reddish brown to black in colour and have a delightful smoky, slightly chocolately flavour.
How hot are chipotle chillies?
Chipotle chillies have a medium heat, registering on the Scoville scale at 15,000-25,000 SHU’s.
What kind of oil should I use?
You can use any vegetable oil. I like sunflower or rapeseed (canola) oil but you can use a generic vegetable oil that can withstand high temperatures. You can use olive oil if you prefer but it’s not necessary.
Can I use an oil spray?
If you prefer to spray the potato wedges then be sure to use an ‘oil only’ spray and not one that is ‘light’ as that kind of spray contains additives that can damage your air fryer.
Can I make Air Fryer Chipotle Chilli Potato Wedges ahead of time?
I don’t recommend making the potato wedges ahead of time. Although you can reheat them in your air fryer they are not as good as when you make them just before you eat them.
If you really need to get ahead then I suggest you give the potato wedges just 10 minutes in the air fryer, then remove them to a kitchen paper lined plate. Pop them back in the air fryer for another 10 minutes just before you plan to serve them.
Can I freeze Chipotle Chilli Potato Wedges?
It’s hardly worth freezing potato wedges, potatoes don’t freeze well when they are raw. And they take so little time to prepare and cook that it’s really not worth freezing them.
