Why should I cook with courgettes?
Courgettes are a versatile addition to your cooking, they are simple to use and a great choice for both everyday meals and creative recipes. Here are some reasons to choose courgettes:
- They are so versatile! You can grill, roast, saute, bake or sprialize courgettes to make courgetti spaghetti. You can eat them raw, add them to pasta, curries, salads, fritters, soups and even cakes.
- Because courgettes have a mild taste they are total flavour sponges, soaking up all the herbs spices and sauces you add to them. Try them sprinkled with my easy Rosemary Seasoning Salt.
- If you are looking for a vegetable that is easy to prepare then look no further. All you need to do is give them a wipe and then cut into the shapes that you want to use. They are soft enough to grate easily to add to sauces and stews to add some extra bulk to your dish.
- Courgettes are low in fat and calories, but they are high in fibre and vitamin C.
What are courgettes?
The courgette is from the same family as cucumber, squash and melon. They usually have a deep green skin with firm pale flesh, but there are many different varieties available. Some have yellow skin and some are round balls rather than the traditional long shapes shown above.
What’s the difference between courgettes and zucchini?
They are the same vegetable, the only difference is in the language. Courgette is a French word and zucchini is an Italian word. In the UK they are usually called courgettes or baby marrows, and in the US and many other countries, they’re called zucchini.

Can I grow courgettes in my garden?
It is very easy to grow courgettes. I grow them in my garden, and they do well in large pots too. Once the plants get established, they produce an abundance of fresh green or yellow fruits which are ideal for making so many courgette recipes.
Can I freeze courgettes?
Yes, courgettes freeze really well, simply cut them into slices or batons and open freeze. Then store them in a freezerproof container and add them direct from the freezer to your recipes.
